Cape Town: The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket South Africa will announce the schedule for the global tournament on October 1, according to a report by Cricbuzz.
The Cricket World Cup is held every four years and was first played in 1975. South Africa will host the World Cup for the first time since 2023. Previous reports have suggested that the tournament could begin on October 2, with the final scheduled for November 21.
The ballot for World Cup tickets will also open on October 1. Tickets will not be available for immediate purchase; instead, fans will be able to register for the ticket ballot from October 1.
Of the 14 teams participating in the World Cup, 10 will be confirmed by September 30, which is the deadline for direct qualification. The hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe, have already secured their places, while eight other teams will qualify based on the ICC ODI rankings.
The remaining four teams will qualify through a qualification tournament and will be listed in the schedule as Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2, Qualifier 3 and Qualifier 4. Namibia, the third host nation, has not yet secured direct qualification.
So far, India (No. 1), New Zealand (No. 2), Pakistan (No. 4), Australia (No. 5), England (No. 6), Sri Lanka (No. 7), Afghanistan (No. 8) and Bangladesh (No. 9) are in positions to qualify for the World Cup through the rankings. Despite being ninth in the rankings, Bangladesh is in line to qualify because South Africa, ranked third, has already secured its place as a host nation.
The West Indies, who are currently playing an ODI series against India, have failed to qualify directly for the World Cup. They will have to secure their place through the qualification tournament scheduled to be held early next year. The two-time World Cup champions also failed to qualify for the 2023 World Cup.
According to the details, registration for World Cup tickets will also begin during the schedule announcement event. The 2027 World Cup is expected to begin on October 2, with the final scheduled for November 21.
A total of 14 teams will participate in the tournament, with 10 teams expected to be confirmed by September 30. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have already qualified directly, while the other eight teams will be selected based on the ICC ODI rankings.
