The chief selector of the Indian cricket team, Ajit Agarkar, has made it clear to the BCCI that he is not interested in continuing in the position after his current term ends on October 4. Agarkar had recently discussed staying in the role until the 2027 ODI World Cup during meetings with senior board officials, following which he has now made this major decision.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said after the AGM that the board has 15 days to take a decision and that an official announcement will be made at the appropriate time.
According to sources, Ajit Agarkar was deeply unhappy over the selection committee's decisions not being implemented. Following India's tour of England in July, the selection committee decided to move on from Rohit Sharma with the 2027 World Cup in mind, and Rohit was informed of the decision. Despite this, Rohit Sharma was selected again for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, beginning September 27. Agarkar was reportedly upset that his vision and plans were not being implemented, which became the main reason behind his decision to step down.
Ajit Agarkar, who took charge in July 2023, has overseen a highly successful period for Indian cricket. During his tenure, India won the 2023 and 2025 Asia Cups, the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. The team also reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Under Agarkar's leadership, the selection committee made significant changes to the captaincy. Shubman Gill was appointed captain in Tests and ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer was appointed captain in T20Is.
Following Agarkar's departure on October 4, the BCCI will need to appoint a new chief selector before India's tour of New Zealand in mid-October, which includes five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests. The board is also preparing for the IPL 2027 mega auction.
