Delhi: Prominent Shia cleric and leader Maulana Hasan Ali Rajani has welcomed Iraq’s decision to allow Iranian airlines to operate a limited number of daily flights to Najaf, saying the move could provide relief to pilgrims, patients, and passengers undertaking essential travel.

Maulana Hasan Ali Rajani said that any decision concerning air connectivity between Iraq and Iran should give utmost importance to Iraqi sovereignty, international regulations, passenger safety, and transparent oversight.

He said that under the latest arrangement, Mahan Air has been excluded from the permission, while other Iranian airlines have been allowed to operate limited flights to Najaf. Therefore, the development should be viewed as a limited arrangement rather than a full restoration of air connectivity.

Maulana Rajani said that the travel of religious pilgrims and ordinary passengers should not be affected by political tensions. However, he stressed that all requirements related to aviation security, financial regulations, and international sanctions must be fully complied with.

He said that issues between Iran and Iraq should move forward through dialogue, transparent arrangements, and mutual respect so that a safe and reliable travel system can be established for civilians and pilgrims in the region.
