New York: Iran has presented its conditions to the United States for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iranian state media, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed Tehran’s position during a meeting with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Iranian media reported that the conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz include the immediate lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, the immediate release of Iran’s frozen assets, and an end to the war on all “resistance fronts.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also confirmed that Iran’s message was conveyed to the United States through Qatari mediation in New York. According to him, Tehran wants an end to the war on all fronts, a halt to U.S. military actions, an end to the naval blockade and economic warfare, and the return of Iranian assets.
Iran has already indicated that it could reopen the Strait within approximately a week if U.S. military pressure and the blockade are reduced.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has described the ongoing contacts in New York as positive, saying that talks between the United States and Iran are continuing and that there is hope of reaching an agreement. However, fundamental differences over the terms remain between Washington and Tehran.
The issue surrounding the Strait of Hormuz is also important for global markets, as it is a major maritime route for the transportation of oil and other energy products from the Persian Gulf. Therefore, any development concerning its closure or reopening could affect global oil markets and regional trade.
